Stefany Zaroban, Internet Retailer Director of Research and speaker at this year’s Global e-commerce Conference, has been hard at work again cranking out the 13th edition of this year’s Internet Retailer’s Top 500 Guide®.
The guide ranks the 500 leading e-retailers in the U.S. and Canada based on their annual web sales, and features an Internet Retailer Performance Score which assesses and rates each merchant by the success of its online strategy in comparison to its direct competitors as well as the overall North American market.
This latest research shows 84% of all e-commerce sales in the U.S. come from the 500 largest web merchants in North America. The #1 position on the list was once again reclaimed by the largest North American online retailer Amazon.com, which increased online sales by 16.3% to an Internet Retailer-estimated US$92.4bn.
For all retailers ranked in the Top 500, total 2015 sales grew by US$39.31bn — 13.5%. Web-only retailers accounted for 50.3% of that growth, while retail chains were a distant second at 28.6%. Consumer brand manufacturers and catalogers followed at 14.3% and 6.9% respectively.
Mid-sized companies — those ranked between 201-300 — proved to be the fastest-growing web merchants today. These are mostly niche merchants, selling only online, and collectively they grew their web sales by 15.5% to US$10.6bn in 2015.
Interestingly, three of the top six fastest-growing e-retailers on this year’s Top 500 Guide® sell their own brand of mattress. The distinction of fastest-growing merchant on the list this year goes to Leesa — a web-only mattress retailer. Leesa apparently grew 2015 online sales by a very impressive 20,257.1% to US$28.5mn, just edging onto the top 500 ranking at the 499th spot. Leesa is one of 26 web merchants that are completely new to Internet Retailer’s annual e-commerce rankings.
